Oh, The Places You’ll Go

Dr. Seuss hit home with that one.

I find myself reading it a lot lately.

When you hear it as a kid, you love the pictures, colors and rhyming…

Then when you are an adult (or at least told you are to be one now) the book takes on a whole new dimension.

Congratulations! Today is your day. Your off to great places you are off and away!

There is so much in the idea of “Great Places”…

The book takes you on your own life’s journey and you don’t even realize it till you are reading it to two small people to try to help them fall asleep.  Oh, The Places You’ll Go.  Truer words were never spoken.

Between having brains in your head and shoes on your feet, trying to make good choices on which streets you should take and which to avoid…taking chances to leave town and go into the “wide open world”…going on adventures, soaring to the highest of heights…having your proverbial bubble burst and landing in a slump of unslumpable slumpiness.  Pushing forward because there is more to life than being stuck in a waiting place…a most useless place.  Facing up to your fears, carrying on no matter how lonely and how scary life can seem at times…learning how to love yourself and play fair with yourself because “alone is something you’ll be quite a lot”.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go.

Then, you start winning and moving mountains because you persevered and pushed through and kept fighting the “good fight”….you learn to live with yourself, you learn to love yourself, you learn to succeed in a humble fashion because you know what the slumpy slumps and useless waiting places are like and you come to not wish them on anyone…

You come to realize that no matter your name and no matter who you are, you have a shot at making this world great and getting stuck on a lurchy perch is part of the recipe for long lasting success and no one is truly exempt from failure…

You learn that no one is perfect and we are all running around this ball of mixed protons and neutrons and electrons and we are all basically good and sensitive and selfish (to a degree) creatures that want to be accomplished, happy, peaceful, loved and a number of other things…we are just at different parts in our journey and it takes some of us longer to figure it out that it does others.

So, after one full week into the New Chinese Year of the Horse 2014…reflecting on what has been, what is and what will be:

The idea of “great places” and what constitutes a slump and what waiting places feel like and how there are more people than not still stuck in one of these useless ruts and what loneliness can really feel like when you think you have it all and you think you have lost it…

The idea of “great places” and what that means for each individual person…

what it meant for me at the age of five and what it means to me at the age of …well…older 😉

In the year of prosperity and success…the year of “great places”…

will I be the winniest winner of all?  Will I know what that means?

Will I be able to find my mountain and have enough sense to know when, how and which direction to move the darn thing?

I guess it is all part of the journey.

Oh, The Places I’ll Go.
